Jordan’s Public Security Department (PSD) has announced that around half-a-million licensed and unlicensed light arms in the possession of Jordanians.
PSD Director, major general Thaher Fawaz was quoted by Jordan Times as saying that “it is true that there is a weapon in every Jordanian home, but these are our numbers which are accurate and we have nothing to fear or be ashamed of.”
He added that if and when these weapons are used they are “used in internal family matters such as crimes of honor, revenge and other family crimes.”
The police chief was presenting a paper on “The phenomenon of small arms in Jordan,” to a conference that started Sunday entitled: “Small Arms in the Arab Region: National and Regional Measures,” said the daily.
According to Fawaz, the number of licensed weapons which including guns, rifles and automatic weapons reached 125,312 in the year 2000 – Albawaba.com
