Some 305 new factories were set up in Lebanon in the first quarter of 2002 compared with the launch of 172 factories during the same period last year, a 77.3 percent rise, reported Lebanon’s Ministry of Industry.
Close to 62 billion Lebanese pounds ($41.4 million) were invested into the establishment of the factories in the first three months of 2002, compared to investments worth LL 26.4 billion last year. The new plants manufacture foodstuff, metallurgy, wood products, garments, leather and chemicals.
Lebanese industrial exports totaled LL 770.4 billion ($509 million) in the first nine months of 2001, recording a 69 percent growth rate from the corresponding period of the previous year, when the value of industrial exports stood at LL 456.4 ($301.6 million) billion, the Ministry reported. — (menareport.com)
