1. Customer service is the key

This is by far; and based on experience, one of the most crucial things you need to bear in mind. If you’re literally the best but you don’t know how to make your customers feel valued, you won’t make it! Unfortunately, nowadays, it has become normalized for customers to be treated poorly. So imagine if you give them the royal treatment, what do you think will happen?

2. Find an edge

Find something that makes you stand out from your competitors so people would be tempted to come to you instead.

3. Invest in marketing

Of course, word of mouth is very effective, but unfortunately, growing your fan base organically is no longer a thing. Everyone is fighting for your customers’ short attention span. So, you need to be a little bit generous when it comes to increasing your exposure.

On-ground exposure is as important as online

Yes, marketing is important, but marketing involves being there both online and offline. Do not rely on online marketing only; offline presence is just as important. Especially because this is where you get to implement the customer service advantage we previously talked about.

4. Don’t do it all yourself

Don’t overwhelm yourself with too many tasks. In fact, don’t overwhelm yourself with ALL tasks. If wear too many hats, you’ll eventually lose track. If possible, try to outsource some jobs. This way, you won’t be just leaving yourself some room to focus on important things, but you’ll also focus on the things you’re more specialized at.

5. Invest A LOT of time

On the other hand, you need to treat your small business as an actual business rather than just a short-term project. That’s why you need to invest a lot of time into it; if not all. If you’re doing it as a side job, you won’t be giving it all the nurturing it needs to grow into something bigger and more promising.

6. Keep improving

Leave room for constant innovation and development if you’re expecting to survive the notoriously competitive market. If you don’t do so, someone else will and you’ll fall way back behind.

7. Give it your all

Most importantly, you must believe in your business and its concept. If you don’t have faith in your own idea and believe that you will truly succeed, unfortunately, you won’t. Give it your all; your passion, your effort, your time, and dedication and soon you’ll see your baby project blossoming into something more.
