The African Development Bank (ADB) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) have agreed to enhance their collaboration on governance at country level through the acceleration of Country Governance profiles (CGPs), a Bank diagnostic tool on governance matters.
This CGP would help to strengthen activities of both institutions and would allow for a better coordination of programs related to governance. The two organizations are also undertaking to help convene a workshop with governance non-governmental organizations (NGOs), with a view to endorsing the idea of an African Governance Observatory and to reflect on its functioning, activities, and budgets.
This agreement came as part of the conclusions of the ADB/UNDP strategic partnership technical-level meetings, which took place in Tunis from December 15 to 18, 2003. The Tunis consultations also provided the opportunity to re-invigorate the partnership in view of the temporary re-location of the Bank and the UNDP/ADB Partnership office to Tunis and Banjul respectively.
The meetings reviewed the status of the activities agreed upon during the previous consultation and put in place a revised work program on such issues as country-level collaboration, governance, gender, micro-finance, energy, environment, HIV/AIDS, poverty reduction, and private sector development.
The technical-level meetings were held within the context of the Memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed by ADB President Omar Kabbaj and the Administrator of UNDP in 2001. The MoU guides the strategic partnership between the two institutions to better operationalize the ADB/UNDP Cooperation Agreement signed in 1977. — (menareport.com)
