Dubai-based Al-Naboodah-Laing Construction Company won a major engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for Dubai International Airport’s $4.1 billion expansion project. The firm has been commissioned to build Concourse 2 and Terminal 3 by January 2006.
According to the Dubai Department of Civil Aviation (DCA), five other consortiums bid for the project, including Canada-based CCC-Dutco Balfour Beatty, Al Habtour-Murray and Roberts, Arabtec and Belhasa Six Construct and Higgs and Hills-Arabian Construction Company, reported Gulf News.
DCA embarked upon the airport expansion program in mid 2002. A major reason for the expansion plan has been the projected growth of passenger and cargo movements. The passenger movement projections have been revised and according to new projections, Dubai will witness 70 million passengers by 2016 and 100 million by 2025.
Al-Naboodah Laing was formed in 1977 as a joint venture company owned by Saeed & Mohammed Al-Naboodah Holdings and the John Laing Group from the UK. Al-Naboodah Laing has been involved in the construction of many landmark buildings in Dubai including the clubhouses for both the Emirates and Creek Golf Clubs and the Deira Tower. Projects underway include the headquarters building for the National bank of Dubai and a mixed shopping, residential and office complex on the bank of Dubai Creek. — (menareport.com)
