Aluminium Bahrain (Alba) recently completed the pouring of the first major concrete foundation for Power Station 4 (PS4) at the Line 5 construction site.

The pouring of the first concrete foundation for PS4 is a major milestone for this project as it marks the commencement of the major foundations for the equipment and buildings. In addition, this event marks the progress of the Line 5 project since its initial stages of development and indicates the speed and efficiency at which the expansion has been proceeding in order to meet the target schedule.

Power Station 4 will house Gas Turbine No. 52 along with three other similar gas turbines and two steam turbines which will help supply 660 MW of electric power to Alba's 5th Pot line. The foundation of Gas Turbine No.52 comprises of approximately 200 cubic meters of concrete and 40 tons of steel reinforcement.

The Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract for Power Station 4 was awarded to Alstom on a Turnkey Basis in April 2003 and was subcontracted to local contractor Ahmed Mansoor Al A'Ali who will undertake all civil engineering and building works.

Alba's Line 5 Expansion, due for completion in February 2005 will expand the company’s annual production by a further 307,000 tons per annum, making it the largest smelter in the world outside of eastern Europe. At a total cost of $1.7 billion, the expansion will include a new power station, carbon and casthouse plants and other facilities. — (menareport.com)
