French Alcatel has been selected by Globalcom Data Services (GDS) to install a nationwide broadband wireless network in Lebanon. Alcatel will supply the Lebanese operator with its LMDS (Local Multipoint Distribution Services) solution for their broadband access network.
GDS has selected Alcatel's LMDS solution after conducting extensive field trials last year. The 26GHz-network rollout already covers Beirut and its suburbs and will be extended to Tripoli and the Jounieh regions in a near future.
GDS is currently offering leased lines to corporate users such as most of the major banks in Lebanon and plans to use Alcatel's LMDS solution to provide high speed Internet access as part of its ISP (Internet Service Provision) offer.
Adopted by more than 100 customers worldwide, Alcatel's LMDS offers operators a flexible, bandwidth-efficient solution, accommodating increasing amounts of traffic.
GDS is a subsidiary of GlobalCom Holding, a private data operator in Lebanon. Starting in 1997, GDS implemented a data network offering services meeting the basic needs of the Lebanese Data market. Benefiting from the rapid deployment of a wireless based network, GDS covered in a few months’ time 75 percent of Lebanon and 90 percent of its population.
Alcatel designs, develops and builds communications networks, enabling carriers, service providers and enterprises to deliver content, such as voice, data and multimedia, to consumers worldwide. With sales of €25 billion in 2001 and 99,000 employees, Alcatel operates in more than 130 countries. — (menareport.com)
