The increase in tariffs for public transport has inspired riots in the regions of Torich and Ouled Djerad. Several Algerian newspapers claimed that this reflects the general mood in large parts of the country. Public transport is a major means of moving around in a country in which there are few cars by person. Transport prices have risen by as much as 25% recently.
The government claims this is necessary to pay for repairs and improvements but the general population argues this should be subsidized by government money and not by more taxes.
