ALBAWABA – Apple Maps, the web mapping service developed by Apple, is currently facing criticism for not renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, as Google Maps did.

Google Maps renames the Gulf of Mexico

Last week, US President Donald Trump announced plans to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. Google Maps, the popular web service that provides detailed geographical information, updated the name accordingly within the United States.

However, Apple Maps has not yet updated the name, which has drawn significant criticism in the country. At the same time, some people praise Apple for not agreeing to the change.

According to Google, users in the US will see the name as the Gulf of America, while users in Mexico will continue to see it as the Gulf of Mexico. (Shutterstock)

This decision has sparked an ongoing debate on social media, with many users urging Apple to make the same changes as Google. Meanwhile, others have praised Apple and even stated they would delete Google Maps from their devices.

Notably, Google explained in a blog post that the name change applies only in the US, not globally.

The company further clarified that users in the US will see the name as the Gulf of America, while users in Mexico will continue to see it as the Gulf of Mexico. Additionally, users all around the world will be able to view both names.

"People using Maps in the US will see 'Gulf of America,' and people in Mexico will see 'Gulf of Mexico.' Everyone else will see both names," Google stated.
