Iranian car major, the Iran-Khodro Company, intends to manufacture 15,000 Peugeot 206 sports utility model cars during the next Iranian year from March 2001 to March 2002, the company's Deputy Director, Hoseein Amiri recently announced.
Mr. Amiri commented that his company would begin production of the model with an initial output of 15,000, which will grow to 120,000 units within three years. The company currently produces Peugeot 405 vehicles.
Speaking at a seminar for automobile assembly part, which included French and Italian participation, Mr. Amiri added that initially, 10 percent of the car parts would be supplied locally, with 60 percent to of the Peugeot 206 parts would be domestically produced within three years. Eighty spare parts producers from 55 French firms are participating in the three-day long seminar.
Managing Director of car manufacturer SAPCO, Ali Akbar Taheri, said the company would require $5,000 for the import of car parts for each car in the initial phase. He remarked that SAPCO has made progress in manufacturing car spare parts and exported $25 million worth of spare parts to foreign nations.
Iran-Khodro, which controls 65 percent of the Islamic Republic's car industry, assembles certain models of France's Peugeot, as well as the Peykan, the Iranian version of the old Hillman Hunter. The company recently signed an agreement for the construction of the Peugeot 205.
