The State of Bahrain intends (with aid from the private sector) to develop its e-commerce sector.
New principles will be sought for each state sector, in order to regulate and govern e-commerce activities, by developing legislation to ensure consumer and product protection.
Bahrain Cabinet Affairs and Information Minister, Mohammed Al Mutawa disclosed that the reconsideration of laws, rules and regulations that are inconsistent with modern technology, would also be employed to attain the desired goal. Furthermore, the creation of mechanisms necessary for enforcement of the new legislation, protection of intellectual property with regard to rights related to e-commerce, and the coordination of the activities of government and the private sector in e-commerce, would be key
avenues for success, according to the Minister.
At the two-day "Legal Aspects of E-Commerce" seminar, Al Mutawa conveyed his belief that Bahrain would achieve progress in e-commerce as it has modern infrastructure and developed means of communication.
He stated, "The need of the hour is to study all aspects of e-commerce, especially legal aspects, to ensure modern and developed electronic commerce while protecting all commercial and other transactions."
Meanwhile, Bahrain Tradanet (BTN) recently announced the launch of an e-procurement portal for the Bahrain business community. BTN is also creating an e-commerce business-to-business (B2B) portal in Bahrain, Gulf News reported.
"This is a major announcement which is the culmination of the work that our team here has done over the past few years. This is not just a new product announcement," the company disclosed.
"This means for the Bahrain business community that they can take early advantage of the new technology and win real tangible competitive advantage - for themselves and the whole country," relayed BTN Chairman and CEO Ousama Najjar.
"This is a first for Bahrain. The portal is unique because it is built in Bahrain for Bahrain, so members of the community will be secure in the knowledge that their business information will not leave the country unless they want it to. Security of information is a vital consideration when moving to e-commerce," BTN Chief Operating Officer Alan Livingston announced.
