The Bahraini Telecommunication Company (Batelco) announced that it will drop its fees by 16 percent at the beginning of January 2002. The Bahraini government owns 39 percent Batelco’s stakes, the British Cables & Wireless Company holds another 20 percent with the rest of the shares exchanged on the local stock exchange. The government has recently stated that it will enable foreign companies to enter the Bahrain telecommunication in order to put an end to Batelco’s monopoly of the sector. — (menareport.com)
