The Abu Dhabi Polymers Company (Borouge), the United Arab Emirates (UAE)'s first significant downstream petrochemical investment, was officially inaugurated last month and awarded ISO 9001:2000 certification at Ruwais near Abu Dhabi.

It is the first petrochemical facility in the Middle East and Asia Pacific to be equipped with Borealis' proprietary Borstar bimodal polymerisation technology (OGN).

The 260-hectare complex, one of the largest and most advanced polyethylene facilities in the Middle East, is due to be completed by late 2001. It will produce 450,000 tons of high and linear low-density polyethylene per year.

Established in 1998, Borouge is a joint venture between the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and Europe’s polyolefins producer Borealis. Borouge specializes in the production, distribution and marketing of high performance polyolefin products. Its products are used in applications for plastic film and moulding packaging as well as industrial and domestic pipes in the Middle East and Asia Pacific. — (menareport.com)
