Canon Middle East, the regional subsidiary of the printer and imaging company, reported 46 percent growth in 2000 compared to 1999.

Driving the sales growth were the Iranian, Jordanian and Lebanese markets, where sales grew several-fold. Saudi Arabia, one of Canon's largest markets in the region, reported a more than 30 percent increase in sales.

Canon Middle East was launched in 1998, to build the Canon brand awareness and support its partners in the region. At the time it was surmised that sales growth was imminent because of the regional business community moved towards networked digital systems and away from stand-alone analog.

According to a Cannon spokesperson, the Middle East market has taken enthusiastically to the company’s new line-up of digital cameras, including the Digital IXUS. Sales in the UAE of this product range grew by more than 300 percent.
