Company Press Release:

Compaq Computer Middle East, Mediterranean and Africa (MEMA) announced today that Ralf Schumacher, one of the world’s top Formula One Grand Prix drivers, is to visit Dubai as a guest of the company. Schumacher will be appearing at GITEX for the first day, alongside the BMW WilliamsF1 Formula One racecar that will form a key part of Compaq’s high-tech display at the exhibition.

As the principal sponsor of the BMW WilliamsF1 team, Compaq has an ongoing commitment to taking an active role in the promotion of this popular sport. "Compaq is proud to be able to bring Ralf Schumacher to the region," said Karen Bell-Wright, marketing manager of Compaq Computer MEMA. "His outstanding contribution to Formula One has placed him amongst the world’s most successful and popular racing drivers." As the Middle East computer market leader, Compaq associates itself strongly with speed, dynamism and leadership, qualities that the BMW

WilliamsF1 team personifies.

Compaq powers the process by providing a complete end-to-end solution from early designs, through every stage of refinement, prototyping, manufacture, testing, communication and managing information. BMW WilliamsF1, one of the most successful teams in Formula One history, designs and manufactures the cars. BMW is renowned internationally for developing, assembling and testing the engines.

Ralph Schumacher was born on 30th June 1975 in Huerth, Germany. He first competed in ADAC BMW Junior, Norisring, July 1992. Schumacher spent two successful years with the Jordan team where he gained second place in the 1998 Belgian Grand Prix. This was followed by a notable performance in 1999 when he moved over to WilliamsF1 and finished brilliantly, sixth in the overall world championship, scoring Williams' entire total of 35 constructors' championship points.

In the same year, he came extremely close to taking his first win at the European Grand Prix, only to have his hopes dashed by a puncture. He still hung on to fourth place. The pick of his 1999 drives was Silverstone where he held off Heinz-Harald Frentzen despite enormous pressure from his countryman to take third.

In the current 2000 season race championship results so far, Ralf has secured three podium finishes in the Australian, Belgian and Italian Grand Prix respectively. Ralf remains fifth in the rivers championship rankings to date. There is one further race before the end of the season, the Malaysian (Sepang) Grand Prix to be held on 22 October.
