In the near future, many development projects will be inaugurated in Yemen. Over the next month, for instance, 54 new wire and wireless telecommunications projects, worth YR10 billion, will be launched. Additionally, the cornerstone for other 27 projects worth YR6 billion will be laid.
Speaking to al Sharq al Awsat daily, Muhammed al Qasus, the manager of the Yemeni wire and wireless telecommunications department, said that these projects include several telecom stations, a new telephone exchange, an additional 75,000 lines, and an SDH project to connect Sanaa with 8 governates. Among the projects for which foundations will be laid are the expansion of telephone exchanges in Sanaa and the installation of 20,000 lines and five visual cords to cover 7 cities.
According to al Qasus, Yemen has invested more than YR8.5 billion on reconstructing its telecom infrastructure since 1990.
Meanwhile, al Sharq al Awsat daily reported that the Yemeni government recently signed an agreement with the Arab Fund for Social and Economic Development to receive an $86-million grant. This sum will be directed to finance the Sihut – Nashtun road project in al Murah district, southeast of Sanaa. This project’s total costs are estimated at $114.3 million. This project comes within the framework of integrating the Yemeni highway network with neighboring countries, mainly to the Sultanate of Oman. The new road will stretch across 175 km.
