Passenger movement through the Dubai International Airport in the first quarter of 2002 registered at 3.8 million, an 8.5 percent increase compared to figures from the same period in the previous year. Dubai Cargo Village recorded an 18 percent growth having handled a total of 162.9 million kilograms of freight, confirmed statistics from the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA).
The cost of running the Dubai International Airport reached 340 million Emirati dirhams ($92 million) in 2001. Although the revenue generated from the airport is mostly spent in running the facility itself, major capital investment on expansion comes from funds made available by the Dubai Government.
The DCA started planning the second phase of Dubai International Airport’s expansion early in 2001. The $2.5 billion expansion program includes the construction of Terminal three, concourse two and concourse three, all of which will be exclusive to Emirates airlines. The entire project is slated to be completed by 2006. According to forecasts, the airport is expected to receive 30 million flyers in 2010. — (menareport.com)
