Dubai Duty Free recorded $82 million in sales for the first quarter of 2003, a 17 percent increase over the same period last year, stated a press release.

First quarter figures show an increase of 29 percent in the electronics category, while gold sales rose by 13 percent and perfumes by 20 percent. In the first three months, a major increase in duty free sales was also recorded in Terminal 2, which primarily caters to charter traffic and Eastern European flights.

The Middle East represents around four percent of annual global duty free sales which reached approximately $20 billion for 2002. As a result of record sales of Dh 1.1 billion ($306 million) last year, Dubai Duty Free accounts for some 40 percent of total Middle East duty free sales and is now positioned fifth in the world in terms of airport duty free sales. — (menareport.com)
