The strategically located Dubai offers a range of health solutions that meet the highest global standards and are supported by state-of-the-art technologies, Dr Layla Al Marzouqi, Director of Health Tourism Department at Dubai Health Authority (DHA) said in an interview, noting that most travelers coming to Dubai to seek medical treatments are from the GCC nations.

“Due to its world-class status and reputation and strictly regulated environment. Dubai continues to be the number one medical tourism destination in the Arab region and the 16th health tourism destination globally. It offers the medical tourists from overseas, a highly qualified pool of multi-disciplinary medical professionals, choice of world-class facilities, absence of long waiting lists and a pleasant environment for post recovery. Dubai has a strong health and regulation framework and this has helped ensure quality healthcare, which, in itself is a catalyst for medical tourism,” she explains.

Excerpts of the interview follow:

• What sort of customers will Dubai Health Experience help?

Dubai Health Experience attends to the needs of health tourists from all over the world in a bid to enhance Dubai’s position on the global medical tourism map and catapult the city into one of world’s major healthcare tourism destinations. It complements the ambitious vision of Dubai Health Authority (DHA) to attract over 500,000 visitors a year by 2021 and address their requirements for top-notch health, wellness, and cosmetic solutions.

• Are you planning to launch any specific offer/packages that targets mainly the KSA?

Ans. During the Arabian Travel Market 2018, Emirates Holidays, the tour operating arm of Emirates Airline, and DHA’s Health Tourism department teamed up to offer a myriad of tailor-made health and wellness packages in Dubai. These packages are specifically targeting tourists from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, a major source market in the region.

Emirates Holidays has already partnered with premier establishments, namely DNA Health at Madinat Jumeirah and Rayya Wellness Retreat at the Retreat Palm Dubai, M Gallery by Sofitel, to provide their health and wellness programs. We are also planning of jointly developing a range of preventive health check-up holiday packages for individuals, families, and children in collaboration with major hospitals and clinics in Dubai.

• What do you expect in 2018? What will be your targets and strategies?

We expect to see significant progress in Dubai’s long-term strategic development plan for the healthcare sector. Specifically, we are confident that we have made headway in boosting the emirate’s leading position in the regional industry as part of our initiatives to catapult the city into one of the top 10 medical tourism destinations in the world.

As it is, Dubai already occupies a prestigious global position as an ultimate destination for tourism and recreation. Taking this to the next level, the government is vying to make this a major global destination for medical tourism by setting its target at 500,000 tourists a year by 2021.

We will continue to market the initiative of Dubai Health Experience and develop new tools to increase the reach to the target market and share the success stories and vison of the leadership.

To achieve the government’s target, several key initiatives are being deployed such as extensive research and analysis; promotion of investment prospects; implementation of strategic health tourism campaigns; and continuous collaboration with the private sector and national healthcare providers.
