Durrat Al Bahrain is the Kingdom’s largest planned luxury mixed-use, residential, and commercial and resort development. This 20 km2 development has been created across a cluster of 11 spectacular islands. It will host over 2,000 beautiful beachfront villas, 3,600 executive apartments and offices, a luxury hotel and spa resort, parks and entertainment precincts, mosques and international schools, premier retail malls and restaurants, a 400-berth marina and an Ernie Els designed 18-hole championship golf course.

Named after the ‘most perfect pearl’ in the Arabian Gulf, Durrat Al Bahrain is a US$4 billion joint development owned by the Government of Bahrain and the Kuwait Finance House (Bahrain). The development was master planned and designed by Atkins, the world renowned design, engineering and consultancy firm, and KMC Bovis are the project development management firm for the project.

The character and design of Durrat Al Bahrain reflects the highest quality of design principles in every corner of the project. Thus the decision to fit out the bathrooms with Villeroy & Boch sanitary ware was just a continuation of the high quality standards.

Asked for their reasons to choose Villeroy & Boch sanitary ware for the bathrooms a spokesperson from Atkins said: “At Atkins we share a common passion for perfection. In striving for this, the demands on the design are closely linked to the time, location and culture. At Durrat Al Bahrain that meant the creation of a simple, clean and modern design amidst the ever changing and moving waters of the Arabian Sea. This aspect needed to be reflected especially in the bathrooms.”

“Though Villeroy & Boch has an enviable track record in the region when it comes to supplying hotels and projects, the Durrat Al Bahrain project has been another milestone for us and in our partnership with Al Sayyar Trading, the well established sanitary ware supplier that is our exclusive partner in Bahrain.”, said Thorsten Bies, Regional Manager of Villeroy & Boch Middle East’s bathroom and wellness division. Al Sayyar Trading signed the deal with Durrat Al Bahrain in 2008 to supply the exclusive German ceramics for the first 1000 villas on “The Islands”.

‘The Islands’ consist of 5 petal-shaped islands and 6 atoll-shaped islands that house luxury residential villas, gardens and beaches in an enchanting setting offering a sanctuary of peace and tranquillity. Designed in two circular rows, The Islands are a glorious visual treat and undoubtedly the crown jewel of the Durrat Al Bahrain development. A total of 2,000 lavish villas of varying sizes and styles adorn the islands with privileged lifestyle options like private beaches, marina and boat moorings, lush gardens and breathtaking sea views. Villeroy & Boch supplies these villas with washbasins, toilets, bidets and bathtubs of its contemporary ranges Subway, Pure Basic and Sunberry. For the premium type villas the designers chose the Nexion bathtub with its curving design and elegantly-shaped panel, a shape only possible thanks to the high-tech material Quaryl®, a unique quality material available exclusively from Villeroy & Boch.

Upon completion, Durrat Al Bahrain will be the region’s most prominent seaside resort city, capable of accommodating 60,000 residents and up to 4,500 daily visitors, putting Bahrain on the upscale tourism map and setting a new standard for urban development in the Kingdom.
