Durrat Al Bahrain, the Kingdom’s largest planned luxury mixed-use residential, commercial and resort development, has announced that it has concluded a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Bahrain Center for Studies and Research. The agreement will see Durrat Khaleej Al Bahrain provide some BD 101,000 in research funds to the Centre in support of a newly launched marine project.

The MoU was signed at a ceremony attended by Dr. Mohammed Al Ghattam, Chairman of the Bahrain Center for Studies and Research and Mr. Jassim Al Jowder, Chief Executive Officer of Durrat Al Bahrain.

Durrat’s cooperation with the Centre on the marine project reflects its ongoing commitment to safeguarding and building awareness of the Kingdom’s vast and rich sea life and marine environment.

The project will specifically look to develop a website that can provide a wealth of information on Bahrain’s marine life and endangered species, such as the Dugong and Sea Turtles. Research studies will also be funded to update records of these scarce species and to try to locate and protect those living in Bahraini waters.

With the announcement of the project, work will also begin on a 200 page Atlas compiled by both local based and internationally renowned marine biologists, which will later be available online for all marine life environmentalists and enthusiasts.

“We are pleased to announce the marine research sponsorship with the Bahrain Centre for Studies and Research. At Durrat Al Bahrain we understand the importance of protecting Bahrain’s natural beauty, in which marine life play an important role. Durrat has been designed to complement and build on Bahrain’s sea views and marine environment and we are dedicated to doing all we can to support their longevity for many generations to come,” said Mr. Jassim Al Jowder, Chief Executive Officer of Durrat Al Bahrain.

Commenting on the agreement, Dr. Mohammed Al Ghattam, Chairman of the Bahrain Center for Studies and Research, added, “We are delighted with Durrat Al Bahrain’s cooperation on this important study, which will play an important part in helping to preserve and protect Bahrain’s rich marine environment and history. The Centre continues to conduct top quality international research across many economic and social sectors, and the sponsorship provided by partners such as Durrat is invaluable.”

Durrat Al Bahrain has been planned as a world-class residential, leisure and commercial and tourist destination, offering a lifestyle experience unrivalled in the Middle East. The project’s masterplan has been built on Bahrain’s rich natural beauty and traditional affinity with the land and sea combined with every conceivable modern amenity.

The development’s unique features include the commercial Crescent, a semi-circular landmass extending into the sea, 6 Atoll Islands, 5 Petal Islands, a stand alone island set to house a 5-star family hotel and resort, a state-of-the-art marina and an 18-hole golf course, all of which is being developed in phases.

It is expected that the project will be completed in its entirety by late 2009 and, at full capacity, will accommodate more than 30,000 full time residents in addition to some 4,000 visitors a day.
