Dredging and marine contractor Van Oord ACZ of the Netherlands has been awarded the contract for the construction of ‘Globe Island’ off the coast of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The client is Nakheel from Dubai, the same client as the one for the famous Jumeirah Palm Island and the smaller Logo islands, which are also under construction by Van Oord ACZ.

The contract value for the construction of Globe Island is approximately 200 million euro ($227 million). Globe Island consists of a group of separate islands representing all continents of the world. The oval-shaped group of islands measures 6X4 kilometers.

The construction of Globe Island requires some 125 million square meters of sand and 13 million tons of rock material. Notwithstanding those large quantities the construction time will be limited to 24 months.

As for the construction of Palm Island and the Logo Islands the sand will be dredged from nearby offshore winning areas using trailing suction hopper dredgers with a loading capacity ranging from 4,500 to 20,000 square meters. The rock will be delivered on large barges and put in place using side stone dumping vessels, split barges and floating cranes.

Van Oord has won the contract in competition with other international dredging and marine construction companies. The project will be executed in co-operation with Ballast Ham Dredging.

This large group of artificial islands too is aimed contribute to the development of Dubai as the tourist center of the Middle East. — (menareport.com)
