Former Egyptian Finance Minister Moheiddin Al-Gharib and six other senior officials who were sent to prison in February 2002 for misuse of public funds, have been granted a retrial by the country’s highest appeals court. Their trial was seen as a turning point in Egypt’s enduring fight against corruption.
Having been found guilty of taking hefty bribes, Al-Gharib was convicted of "corruption, profiteering and abuse of power” and sentenced to eight years in prison with hard labor. Egypt’s Court of Cassation has overturned the ruling this week citing procedural errors in the prosecution, reported AP. — (menareport.com)
