Egyptian workforce currently stands at 18.02 million people, reported Ahmed Amawy, the country’s minister of labor and immigration, according to the Al-Ahram newspaper.

Amawy said the figure consists of five million workers and employees in the state sector, 3.5 million workers and employees in the regulated private sector and 10 million workers in the non-regulated private sector.

Addressing the issue of unemployment, Amawy said it is an international phenomenon, which faces developing as well as industrialized states. Unemployment in Egypt, he said, is the result of accelerating population growth, converting to a liberalized economy, the Gulf War catastrophe, declining petroleum resources and declining money transfers and investments by Egyptians employed abroad. — (Albawaba-MEBG)
