Egypt will complete a Mediterranean highway linking Libya with Israel and the Palestinian Gaza Strip in 2002, the government Al-Akhbar newspaper reported Thursday, August 30.

The 1,000-kilometer (625-mile) road, built in three stages, will have cost around 2.5 billion Egyptian pounds ($600 million), the paper quoted Ahmed Abu Alfa, director of construction for the north coast, as saying.

The central section between Alexandria and Port Said is still under construction, while the link between the Libyan border and Alexandria and the road between Port Said and Rafah on the border with the Gaza Strip and Israel have been open since the mid-1990s. –(AFP, Cairo)
