Bilateral economic cooperation was a focal point of a meeting of the joint Egyptian -Libyan higher committee, which began in Cairo on Tuesday, May 10, under the joint chairmanship of Egyptian Prime Minister Atef Ebeid and the secretary general of the Libyan People's Committee, Mubarak Abdullah Al-Shamikh.
The meeting was highlighted by the signing of a series of agreements in the fields of agriculture, industry, transport, health, construction, electricity, media, culture, petroleum and natural resources.
Discussed at the meeting were means of improving bilateral trade, Egyptian workers in Libya and technical cooperation. Also on the agenda was a possible contribution by Libya to the Toshka irrigation project in Upper Egypt.
According to Mohammad Abdul Enien, who heads a joint Egyptian-Libyan Chamber of Commerce, a proposal has been made to set up a joint company that will market products from the two countries.
The current volume of trade between Egypt and Libya stands at $116 million per annum, and the two sides are aiming to increase that volume to $500 million by 2005. — (MENA Report)
