Emirates, the ambitious national carrier of the Gulf emirate of Dubai, announced Wednesday, April 11, it has been voted airline of the year 2001 in a survey presented as the largest ever of its kind.
Singapore Airlines finished second, Cathay Pacific third, British Airways fourth and Thai Airways fifth. Skytrax research of Britain carried out the poll over a period of nine months during which 2.7 million votes were submitted.
The pollsters described the "without fear or favor" survey as focused wholly on the quality of product and service and passenger experiences, and not on commercial or other influences such as frequent flyer schemes.
Owned by the Dubai government, Emirates serves nearly 60 destinations and aims to become the Middle East's leading airline, pushing passenger volumes to five million this year and seven million by 2003. — (AFP, Dubai)
