1. Korean festival
We're sure most music lovers are familiar with K-Pop. Now here's a chance to listen to something as interesting. The Korean Music Festival that's taking place tonight at Madinat Jumeirah features some highly entertaining art and culture performances. The evening kicks-off with the famed music ensemble SE:UM. The group will enthrall visitors with their improvisation techniques that blend traditional Korean rhythms with American Jazz. Next, the iconic folk singer, Choi Yun Hee will transport you to Seoul as she delights the audience with some of the most emblematic folk songs that have forged and shaped the Korean cultural identity like Arirang, Taepyeong-ga, Batnorae and Jajin Batnorae. Show starts at 7pm. Be there!
2. Nasma pop up
In celebration of the arrival of the new fashion season, the Dubai Design & Fashion Council is showcasing the latest collections of UAE-based fashion, jewellery, bag and shoe designers at pop-up stores around the country. Drop by Galeries Lafayette in Dubai Mall and Tryano in Yas Mall to check out the collection this weekend.
3. Real or not real
Turn your world upside down at this virtual reality and augmented reality theme park. The VR Park in The Dubai Mall will have you playing the part of Big Mike (a weaponised cyber ape); rob banks in Payday: The VR Heist or survive the zombies in The Walking Dead VR Outbreak. Unlimited day passes cost Dhs150.
4. Be a moviemaker
Anyone interested in making movies should drop by Alserkal Avenue on Friday or Saturday, where a documentary filmmaking workshop is being conducted. Experts will run you through basics of filmmaking, editing, story boarding and script writing. Who knows? You could become the next sensation in the film world.
5. Rocking party
The Dubai-based band Distillers are out to rock your weekend with their chilled grooves that include Top 40 party anthems as well as some high-octave rock and pop tunes! The five-piece band with vast experience have supported huge acts like 30 Seconds to Mars, Maroon 5, Ali Campbell, Megadeth to name a few. Head to Hard Rock Cafe Dubai tomorrow to listen to them from 8.30pm.
6. Doomed love
Opera lovers in town are in for a treat when Carmen, one of the world's most popular productions, plays out at Dubai Opera today and tomorrow at 8pm and on Saturday at 4pm. This opera brings to life the dramatic tale of the doomed love affair of a soldier, Don Jose, who falls for Carmen, a fiery gypsy. The opera is sung in French with subtitles in English and Arabic.
7. Stage write
Put your penmanship skills to the ultimate test in this 24-hour play writing competition at A4 Space in Alserkal Avenue tomorrow at 4pm. You'll be given two cards, one outlining a character and another describing a situation. With that as an inspiration, you have just 24 hours to write and turn it in a 10-minute play. The winning play earns a spot in the Short+Sweet Theatre Festival 2019.
8. Her: Story
Following on from the happenings at Dubai Design District on Emirati Women's Day, which highlighted the journeys of eight Emirati women from the d3 community in a special exhibition, visitors can now marvel at the photographic portraits by young Emirati photographer Aisha Binsuroor who has outlined the unique journeys and roles of women in society. The exhibition is on in Building 7, Dubai Design District. Drop by today!
