The Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) is holding an expert group meeting on ‘The Promotion of Digital Arabic Content (DAC)’, June 3-5, 2003, at the United Nations House, Riad Solh Square, Beirut.

The Meeting, which will open at 10:00 am on Tuesday June 3, aims at identifying the best practices for enabling the Arab countries, particularly in the Western Asia region, to develop the Arabic content on the Internet and various digital media.

The meeting will be addressing several themes such as the current situation of the DAC and its status vis-à-vis other international languages; the major applications that promote DAC, particularly online translation, virtual libraries, and education and training; information and communication issues and tools related to the effective use of the Arabic language on the Internet, as well as the issue of the Arabic domain names on the Internet, including procedures and mechanisms needed for their dissemination.

Participants in the meeting will be experts from ESCWA member states as well as from the United Kingdom, Korea, and Switzerland, academics, and representatives of United Nations organizations and concerned institutions. — (menareport.com)
