The Jordan Mobile Telephone Services Company (Fastlink) has confirmed the successful testing and implementation of the first General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) roaming capability in the Middle East.

Fastlink's earliest GPRS Roaming partner is StarHub of Singapore. The next move will include testing similar setups with regional Mobile operators technically prepared for GPRS roaming.

Fastlink is also presently testing GPRS roaming with other international partners including Swisscom of Switzerland, Sonera of Finland and Etisalat of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). At the same time, the company is also trailing MMS roaming with Mobile One in Singapore.

To subscribers, the implementation of GPRS roaming means they can continue to access the Internet using their handset, or laptops connected to handsets, while on travel. GPRS is a technology that allows for always-on access to the Worldwide Web.

Founded in 1995, Fastlink was the first operator to introduce mobile phone services into Jordan. Since its inception, Fastlink has driven penetration, achieving a strong subscriber growth, with the number of users currently totaling more than 680,000. — (menareport.com)
