Tourism officials in Dubai have reported that the Emirate‘s travel sector had grown by five percent over the last year in terms of revenues reaped from incoming visitors.
The same sources added that Dubai targets an annual 16 percent growth rate over the next ten years, according to Al-Riyadh daily. Over three million tourists visited Dubai in 1999, up from 2.54 million in 1998, reflecting an all time high growth rate of 18 percent.
Due to the rising number of travelers, there is currently a need to increase the number of hotel rooms in the Emirate to meet the requirements of both visitors and residents. The government is also looking at regulating the industry so as to maintain its present standards.
Tourism revenues in Dubai are estimated at two billion Emirati dirhams ($544 million) per annum, and accounts for 11 percent of its GNP. — (MENA Report)
