A French foreign ministry official has described as groundless reports that the government in Paris was considering imposing economic sanctions against Israel because of the way in which it is reacting to the Palestinian uprising.
The issue arose last week, as a result of an article in the Israeli Ha'aretz daily, which reported that France had circulated a letter among European Union member states, advocating economic sanctions against Israel because of purported human rights violations against Palestinians.
According to media reports, France also was seeking to cancel the EU-Israel Association Agreement. The Association Agreement was signed in 1995, and it maintains a free trade area established in 1975 and improves the terms of trade in manufactured and agricultural products. — (Albawaba-MEBG)
