Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis said Saturday, September 29, that Athens would back the building of gas links between Greece and its neighbors Turkey and Italy.

"We are looking positively at the plan to construct a gas pipeline in (northeastern) Thrace between Greece and Turkey as well as an electric link between the two countries," Simitis said at the inauguration of a new state-owned electrical plant in Komotini near the border with Turkey.

The Greek premier said his government was also looking "positively at the building of a second gas pipeline between Greece and Italy", noting that an electricity line already runs between the two countries under the Ionian Sea.
