ALBAWABA - China's robotics company Unitree has gone viral after unveiling "GD01," a real-life transformable mecha, aimed to serve as a means of safe transport for civilians. Many internet users said that this is as close as humans have got to a real-life Gundam.
Gundam is a popular Japanese science fiction media franchise that features giant robots at its core. Best known as "Mobile Suit Gundam," the anime first aired in the late 70s and helped put the mecha genre on the map, garnering a cult-like following.
The Hangzhou-based company revealed that "GD01" will weigh around 500kg and cost a whopping $650,000. Unitree took to X (formerly Twitter) and wrote, The world's first production-ready manned mecha. It can transform. It's a civilian vehicle. It weighs ~500kg with you inside. Please everyone be sure to use the robot in a Friendly and Safe manner."

Along with the statement, Unitree also shared an impressive video showcasing the mecha's features, including its ability to punch a massive concrete wall, walk on pedestrian roads (on twos and fours). According to the video, it seems the robot can be controlled wirelessly through commands or manually by a human.
"GD01" drew mixed reactions on social media, with users either praising Unitree for its impressive development or showing concern due to its possible dangers. An internet user wrote, "Who’s going to dare disobey AI in the future, when it can slap you across the face?"
Another added, "'Friendly and safe' Give it 48 hours before someone tries taking one through the McDonald’s drive-thru."
