Thousands of inhabitants of northern Iran have been evacuated following torrential rains, which hit the region over the past two days, witnesses told AFP by telephone.

Many rivers had swollen and houses been damaged or destroyed in towns bordering the Caspian sea, notably Ramsar in Mazandaran province and the neighboring province of Gilan, they said.

Schools and other public buildings have also been closed. ― (AFP, Tehran)
