Jordan Telecom announced on Tuesday that two new high-speed Internet connectivity lines — Speed Line ADSL 1 and 2 — will be available to Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in central Amman as of February 1.
"Our launch of asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) services on time comes as part of our commitment to the Internet and IT sector in Jordan and our support of His Majesty King Abdullah's vision to make this country a communications hub," Jordan Telecom's Chief Marketing Officer Olivier Faure said in a press statement.
"We have met our deadline and commitment and will continue to do so with other value-added services that we plan to launch into the market through this year," Faure added.
Jordan Telecom said ADSL technology is a tool for corporate clients and all users who need greater bandwidth to save time and cut costs on connectivity.
"ADSL runs at a speed up to 10 times faster than dial-up connections," the statement said. "The availability of ADSL will pave the way for the introduction of multimedia services, such as video conferencing, on-line gaming, video on demand and Internet TV programming. Furthermore, the high-speed technology runs on current copper-wire infrastructure and is relatively simple to install and implement," the release added.
The company said small companies or home users can opt to lease the ADSL Speed Line 1— offering download speeds at a maximum of 512Kbs — while Speed Line 2 — with download speeds of up to 1,024 Kbs — could cater for businesses with up to 30 users in need of high-speed Internet connectivity.
Jordan Telecom pledged yesterday that it will gradually extend the service across selected areas in three phases. The first phase will cover Abdali, Tla' Al-Ali, and the central Amman area. The second phase, expected to start in March, will cover other cities such as Aqaba, Mafraq, Irbid, Karak, Salt and Zarqa, and the third phase will extend ADSL to other suburbs of Amman, like Sweileh, Dabouk, and Abdoun, by May. — ( Jordan Times )
