Local security sources revealed that 628 million Egyptian pounds ($162 million) were spent in Egypt on the purchase of illegal drugs during the year 2000, according to Al-Bayan daily. This figure reflects a decrease of EP 30 million compared with the 1988 figures, in which drug purchases hit record levels.

In recent years, Egypt has been making concerted efforts to curb drug use amongst its citizens. A regional program led by the United Nation is helping to alleviate the problem by supporting treatment, education, and programs of drug use prevention throughout the country.

Approximately six percent of secondary school students have admitted to experimenting with drugs despite Egypt’s stringent laws prohibiting the possession of even small quantities of such substances. — (MENA Report)
