The Palestinian economy is losing six million dollars a day because of the uprising against Israel, the head of the Arab Labor Organization (ALO), Ibrahim Kuweidar, told journalists Saturday.
"By imposing a blockade on the Palestinian people Israel has prevented 120,000 Palestinians from going to work and inflicted losses on the Palestinian economy amounting to six million dollars a day," he said.
Israel sealed off the West Bank and Gaza Strip soon after the unrest began on September 28, although many Palestinians succeed in evading the blockade and reaching their work places in the Jewish state.
Kuweidar said the ALO had asked for a commission of inquiry of the International Labor Organization to visit the Palestinian territories to verify the effect on the local economy. t had also asked Arab workers and employers to donate a day's salary to the Palestinians. — (AFP, Cairo)
