Several hundred Iranians in the southern city of Lamerd staged a rally to protest plans to relocate a local refinery, press reports said Saturday.
The Kayhan paper said demonstrators at the rally, held after weekly prayers on Friday, chanted slogans against Interior Minister Abdol-Vahed Mussavi-Lari and demanded the intervention of President Mohammad Khatami.
It said officials were planning to transfer the Parsian refinery from Lamerd to Mohr, another region in southern Fars province.
Mohr was the site of violent unrest in December over plans to re-classify the region for administrative purposes and annex Mohr to Lamerd. Several dozen people were reportedly wounded in clashes with security forces.—AFP.
