Some 1,349 tons of fish and 1,561 tons of shrimp were exported from Iran’s Hormozgan province in the first half of the Iranian year, beginning March 21. The exports generated seven million dollars, reported the region’s Fishery Department.
The price of shrimp has been fixed at 25,000 Iranian rials per kilogram, a decrease of IR 1,500 compared with the price of shellfish last year. The Department predicts that a total 3,400 tons of shrimp will be gathered by the year’s end.
Iran’s shrimp production capacity is estimated at 200,000 tons. Currently, Iran exports only a fraction of its annual 400,000 tons seafood output capacity. In 2000, approximately 4,600 tons of fresh and frozen fish were exported at the cost of a mere $4.6 million. However small, this figure represents an increase of nearly 40 percent from the previous year. — (menareport.com)
