Iran will not accept any pre-conditions from the European Union (EU) to the signing of a trade and cooperation accord, stated deputy Foreign Minister Ali Ahani, following the release of an EU statement urging Iran to respect human rights, fight terrorism, reject weapons of mass destruction and recognize Israel.
The "The EU views the trade and cooperation agreement and the political dialogue and cooperation on counter-terrorism as an integrated package," noted the statement, which was issued following the conclusion of a ninth round of talks held this week between Iran and the EU.
The agreement is part of EU efforts to encourage “constructive engagement” with the Islamic Republic, in contrast to the American policy of isolating the country, branded part of Bush’s “axis of evil”.
The accord with the 15-member block is designed to support trade and investment in Iran while contributing to the country's economic liberalization. It would also aim to strengthen cooperation with Tehran in such areas as the campaign against illegal drugs, refugee assistance, energy and environmental protection, according to EU sources. — (menareport.com)
