A new fish-breeding farm has come on stream in northern Iranian province of Gilan. Established by Iran's Fishery Organization (IFO) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the farm will breed low cost fish such as the sardine, reported IRNA

The IFO and the Ministry of Agriculture provided a 15 billion Iranian rial loan ($1.8 million) to develop the farm and the UNDP provided a $300 million credit line.

The facility is located on five hectares of land and comprises of a production hall, a laboratory and an administrative building in addition to mechanical and cooling installations. The factory’s machinery was imported from Denmark, Holland, Sweden and Germany.

Iran’s breeding farms including underground waters and water pools, which are comprised of 440,000 various small and large water sources such as wells, springs and canals yielded 66,000 tons of various species of cold-water and hot-water fish as well as shrimp in 2000. The IFO’s share of the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP) is rated at 0.5 percent. — (menareport.com)
