An Iranian delegation headed by ambassador Safari Mehdi visited a plant in the Siberian city of Krasnoyarsk Wednesday, May 30, to meet Russian technicians building an Iranian telecommunications satellite, the ITAR-TASS news agency reported.
The delegation was to hold talks with officials of the NPO-PM plant to discuss the design, manufacture and launch of the Zohreh satellite. Russia won the contract ahead of India, France and China.
The $300-million contract to build the telecommunications satellite was signed by NPO-PM, the foreign trade group Aviaexport and the Iranian telecommunication company, ITAR-TASS said.
Iran has called on foreign expertise after a long-cherished ambition since the 1980s to build its own telecommunications satellite failed largely for financial reasons. ― (AFP, Moscow)
