According to <i>Al-Sabaah</i> newspaper, the Iraqi Ministry of Transportation announced that it had passed a number of railway project proposals to specialized companies. The ministry requested these companies to prepare primary designs for the proposed projects.
Mr. Atta Nabil, Undersecretary of Transportation, said that Iraq seeks to set up railway projects connect it with the neighboring countries particularly Syria and Iran. The official added that these projects, once approved, will be financed through the country's central funding, Arab and foreign investments. He estimated the per kilometer cost of a railway project at more than $1.5 million, which the country can not afford at the current time.
