ALBAWABA - Iraqi Kurdistan Prime Minister Masrour Barzani was targeted by two Iranian drones, one hitting his office and the other hitting the home of the Kurdistan Intelligence Chief.
Kurdistan’s Counter-Terrorism Directorate reported no casualties from the attack which marks a significant escalation of the tensions between Kurdish entities and Iran, as Tehran continues to accuse exiled Kurdish groups of serving U.S. and Israel’s interests.
This is not the first time drones targeted the region which has faced more than 1,000 attacks by Tehran and pro-Iran armed groups inside Iraq with drones being repeatedly intercepted over the skies in the capital Erbil with one strike on July 17 killing nine people near the city of Sulaymaniyah in the region's east.
"Following an investigation by the Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism Unit, my personal office and the home of the head of the Security and Intelligence Agency were targeted by Iranian drone attacks earlier today," Kurdistan Prime Minister Masrour Barzani said in an X post.
"This is a dangerous escalation and a direct threat to the security and stability of the Kurdistan region," he added.
The Kurdish Counter-Terrorism unit recorded no casualties in the attack.
