Debts owed by the Iraqi government to the Jordanian private sector are estimated at $23.5 million, according to the General Secretary of the Jordanian Ministry of Industry and Commerce, Sammer Taweel. Earlier this year, Iraq paid off a five million dollar installment for 2001, according to Al-Rai daily.

Taweel added that specific data is lacking regarding the nature these debts. He said that the little information that is available relates to the date these debts were incurred. Thus, the lump sum of $23.5 million is divided into only two categories, post and pre-1998. — (Mena Report)
