A senior source in the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) estimated the costs of re-structuring the Iraqi telecommunication network at one billion dollars. This much-needed project is to be executed over the next seven to ten years, according to the Al-Hayat daily.
The same source added that 154 contract applications were submitted to the Committee 661, on April 25, for the development of the telecommunication sector. The Committee, which supervises commercial contracts signed within Iraq, approved 83 of these contracts, valued at $71 million, and dismissed an the other 71, valued at $208 million.
The source added, however, that the contracts ― those approved as well as those dismissed ― satisfy no more than 25 percent of Iraq’s current telecommunication requirements. ― (MENA Report)
