The Islamic Development Bank offered to finance the construction of two wastewater treatment plants in the Western Bekaa through a $28m interest-free loan. The bank delegation accompanied by representatives from the Council for Development and Reconstruction (CDR)investigated several prospective sites for the implementation of the plants along the Litani River and the Qaraoun Lake.
Around 25 villages dump their sewage into tributaries that infiltrate into the river stream. The highly polluted waters have prompted politicians and activists to demand that an environmental “state of emergency” be declared in the Lake Qaraoun’s area. — ( Banque du Liban et d'Outre-Mer Sal )
