Japan on Monday, February 26, signed over a $8.6-million grant to the UN relief agency for Palestinian refugees to buy flour to bolster a food distribution program, officials said.
The Japanese donation will provide flour for refugees living in the West Bank, Gaza Strip, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon, Jordan's official Petra news agency reported.
The grant agreement was signed at the Amman headquarters of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), less than a week after agency chief Peter Hanser appealed to donor countries for $37.2 million to help alleviate the hardships of refugees mostly in Gaza and the West Bank.
The refugees registered with UNRWA were made homeless by the fighting that followed the creation of Israel in 1948. — (AFP, Amman)
