The United States will supply Jordan with an agricultural grant for 200,000 tons of wheat. The $26 million agreement is part of a US aid package designated to the Kingdom for the year 2002.
The Kingdom is the largest receiver of US wheat assistance in the world, taking delivery of $114 million worth of cereal imports since 1999. The most recent grant brings US wheat donations to Jordan to 880,000 metric tons, provided over the past four years.
Assistance to Jordan has increased significantly since the Gulf Crisis in 1991. In 1994 and 1995, the US waived around $700 million in debt relief to the Kingdom after the signing of the peace treaty with Israel.
